One of my best runs for views a few days ago at Nant Yr Arian mountain bike trail centre. (The pic shows our boys mountain biking near the trail I ran on). I ran a 5k route, which was very well sign posted through flat paths on the steep hillsides, up a few forest slopes, and some top sections with nearly 360 degree panoramas of stunning mountains. I’ve been on some beautiful runs in northern Spain and this trail ranks up with them for scenery. There are also several marked walking trails with spectacular views. The mid Wales mountain range, the Cambrian Mountains, are gorgeously remote, and we had three excellent walks among them without seeing a soul. The Elan Valley is a huge, serene area we drove through on our way home which is beautiful.
Bwlch Nant yr Arian is ten miles east of Aberystwyth, very near Devil’s Bridge, where we stayed. At the centre they feed red kites every day at 3 pm and this is a fabulous sight. Between 100 and 150 kites gather at the edge of a lake where off-cuts from butchers’ shops are strewn across the grass, the kites then swooping down to pick up the meat in a magnificent display of colour, lasting ten minutes or so.
If you’re a keen mountain bike rider, runner or walker, I recommend mid Wales as a peaceful holiday destination with brilliant forest centres to explore.
