Not too sure my brain is thinking straight at the moment, which is hardly surprising, considering recent events.
Just to say though, that to maximise brain health it’s really important to consider the different ways of improving your own mental status.
We know the benefits of different forms of exercise on mental health, but it’s important to incorporate different aspects, other than just the physical.
It might seem quite basic but simple things such as;
Planning Rest and Recuperation – building ‘wind down’ periods into your regular routine.
Time away from social media/computers/phone – allowing the brain to switch off and relax fully.
Effective sleep – quality and quantity of deep sleep to allow recovery.
Thinking in the now – that is being mindful and
focusing on your current situation and not overthinking things
Nutrition – improved gut health to help the brain with probiotics, fermented foods, healthy fats and keeping hydrated. Focus your diet on foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, avocados and leafy green vegetables. Fish oil supplements are very good here too.
Stimulating and using the brain – a balance of challenging the many facets of the brain and recovery. Despite my previous advice there are some great apps for brain training and memory!
Limiting inflammatory response through low stressors and not eating foods such as sugar which have a strong negative effect on brain function. Despite the brain needing carbohydrates the body can make its own source, without direct input.
