Well, where do I begin to decipher all my notes, slides and thoughts, from an epic seminar weekend, on cutting edge information for brain and gut health?
I plan to breakdown areas into bite size readable pieces, to make it a little easier to digest! (pun intended!) 🙄
You don’t need to even look at the statistics to see or hear, we actually have a very sick nation.
The vast majority of the population, do not do enough movement, to make a difference to their health.
Obesity is definitely on an upward trend, so much so we are catching up the United States. The 2017 figures suggests 33% vs 26.9% of the population are obese.
As of 2017, Dementia surpasses heart disease as the number one killer in the UK.
Obviously we must consider Personal responsibility in our own health and not just breakthrough science findings and their applications.
Whilst there are many factors that affect our overall health and wellness, there are a number of critical things that we CAN personally impact on, namely;
What we put in our mouth (including drugs)
How much we move/exercise
Out mental health status,
Our social network of friends/family/work colleagues,
Our rest, recovery and sleep.
And yet we have a nation that is eating less healthily, moving less, having more mental health issues and stress, less time for rest and recovery which then severely impacts on sleep!
I have always liked the following quote, which I thought was originally by the Dali Llama, but on research shows it’s from a chap called Jim Brown.
“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
Whoever the original author, the sentiments are the same, and highlights critically what is happening to mankind (or womankind) in our modern world.
With new technology and research, our nation SHOULD be getting HEALTHIER?
BUT, WHY is this NOT happening?!
Over the next few weeks we will look at the impact our gut health and intestinal flora balance has together with its correlation to brain health, on our overall wellness and disease.
I will pinpoint some critical strategies that will consider ways of improving both our physical, and mental health. We will look at the dietary strategies, exercise suggestions, mental health improvements, impact of our work/life balance, the role of prescription drugs together with our hormonal balance. Within this we will look at the impact of anti biotics and the role of pro biotics within our microbiome. (All our micro organism community that live within all of us).
